SCREEN GUIDE “Tyrone Power in Latin America” February 1947 Flying His Own Plane, Ty Covers 23,5000 Miles on a Vacation With Cesar Romero People, rather than picturesque scenes, made the deepest impression on Tyrone Power and Cesar Romero during their visit to 24 Latin American countries One of their comments on the 10 week trip was: "We never realized that people living in the interior of these countries were even aware of movies. Seeing them and their reaction to us, as representatives of Hollywood, was an object lesson we won't soon forget." The trip, arranged by 20th century Fox as a good-will gesture toward Latin American moviegoers, fulfilled a wartime dream of Ty’s. His plane, Saludos Amigos, was bought in Wichita, Kansa, for about $80,000. The next day, he and Romero started out, with Ty’s friend and secretary, Bill Gallagher, 20th publicist James Denton and Ty’s co-pilot, John Jeffries. The stars were given formal reception at each stop, but also sneaked off to meet village people informally. Back in Hollywood to start "Captain from Castile," Power was consoled when the company went on location in Mexico. Saludos Amigos and its plot-owner are below the border again. |
